Comparison · Bubble vs. Custom App
Your app runs on Bubble. Should you rebuild it?
Bubble got your product built without writing code. Now you're wondering about the bill, the workload meter and the fact that the app only runs on Bubble. Here's what each path costs and when staying is the smarter move.
Bubble vs. a custom app: side by side
Where Bubble has the edge, the table says so.
| Factor | Bubble | Custom app (ArdinGate) |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | None; there's a free plan to build on | $6,000–$11,000 once |
| Monthly cost | $29–$349 per project on annual billing, plus any extra workload1 | $60/mo hosting |
| Who can change it | You, visually, with no code; a set number of editor seats per plan | A developer (Care hosting adds an hour of content edits a month; new features are quoted separately) |
| Time to an MVP | Days to weeks, by yourself | Weeks, after a discovery call and written scope |
| Usage pricing | Workload units included per plan; more costs extra | A fixed server price; heavier use means a bigger server, quoted up front |
| Where it runs | Only on Bubble | Any host you choose |
| What you can take with you | Your data (CSV/JSON) and design; not the app as code | Your database and your code |
The five-year math by plan
Bubble prices each plan per project, not per user, so the team size in the calculator doesn't change Bubble's rows (or the custom row: a custom app has no per-user charge either). Each plan is at its annual-billing rate, with no extra workload. The custom side is a focused web app ($6,000–$11,000) plus $60/mo Core hosting for the same period.
| Option | How it's priced | Total | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bubble Starter (web)1 | $29 / mo (per project, web app, 1 editor, 175K workload units) | $1,740 | Subscription costs less |
| Bubble Growth (web)1 | $119 / mo (per project, web app, 2 editors, 250K workload units) | $7,140 | Subscription costs less |
| Bubble Team (web)1 | $349 / mo (per project, web app, 5 editors, 500K workload units) | $20,940 | Custom costs less |
| Custom build (ArdinGate) | $6,000–$11,000 once + $60/mo hosting | $9,600–$14,600 | You own it |
Each plan at its cheapest published rate (usually billed annually), plus required onboarding fees. Prices checked October 2026; vendors change them, so confirm on their pricing page. Your quote is fixed after a short discovery call.
Over five years, Starter comes to $1,740 against $9,600–$14,600 for a custom app, so the subscription costs less, by a wide margin. Growth comes to $7,140, and the subscription costs less. Team comes to $20,940, and a custom build costs less.
These are Bubble's web-only plans, the like-for-like match for a custom web app. If you also need native iOS and Android apps, Bubble's Web + Mobile plans cost more: $59, $209 and $549 a month on annual billing1. A custom native app is a separate scope, quoted on its own.
So the plan you need decides it. If your app lives comfortably on Starter, rebuilding to save money doesn't add up. Growth still costs less than a rebuild on plan price alone. If you need Team for the editor seats or the workload, a rebuild pays for itself inside the five years.
Workload units: the part of the bill that moves
Bubble measures the server resources your app uses in workload units. Each plan includes a monthly allowance; Bubble's pricing page lists 175K on Starter, 250K on Growth and 500K on Team1, the same on web-only and Web + Mobile plans (on Web + Mobile, your web and mobile apps share them). Page loads, searches, workflows and scheduled jobs all draw on it, so the meter climbs with your traffic and with how the app is built.
Past the allowance, you either buy a workload add-on tier or pay overage as you go. Bubble publishes both. The tiers are $26/mo for 200K more, $89/mo for 750K more, $269/mo for 2.5M more, $539/mo for 6M more, and overage runs $0.10 to $0.15 per 1,000 units depending on the tier2. So the plan prices above are a floor, not a ceiling. Before you compare, check your workload chart in the Bubble editor. A custom app runs on a server with a fixed monthly price; if you outgrow it, the bigger server is priced before you move.
Editor seats and plan jumps
Each plan includes a set number of people who can work in the Bubble editor. Bubble's pricing page lists 1 editor on Starter, 2 editors on Growth and 5 editors on Team1. App users don't count against that, which is why team size doesn't move Bubble's price. Editors do: the day a second or third person needs to build, you're moving up a plan, and each step is a bigger jump than the last ($29, $119, $349 a month). Higher plans also keep server logs longer, which matters when you're chasing a bug.
A custom app has no editor seats. Changes go through a developer, which is slower than dragging an element yourself, but the price doesn't step up when your team grows.
What you own, and what you can take with you
Bubble is clear about this in its own manual. You own your data and your app's design; Bubble owns the code that runs it. Bubble apps can only run on Bubble, and there's no way to export an application as code. Your data can come out: each data type exports as CSV, JSON or newline-delimited JSON from Data > App data, and the Data API can pull records programmatically. Bubble also says that if it were ever discontinued, its source code would be released under an open-source license so apps could run on a self-hosted Bubble server.
In practice, that means leaving Bubble is a rebuild, not a move. Your data comes with you; your pages, workflows and logic get rebuilt in code. For some founders that's fine. For others, especially when investors or a future buyer will ask who owns the code, it's the deciding factor.
When Bubble is the right call
Bubble lets a non-developer ship a working web app. For a lot of founders it's the better choice:
- You're testing an idea. Shipping an MVP without code, and changing it yourself the same day, is the fastest way to learn whether anyone wants it.
- A lower plan covers you. Over five years, Starter comes to $1,740 and Growth to $7,140; against Growth, the subscription costs less. That's money better spent on finding customers.
- You want to make changes yourself. If iterating without waiting on a developer matters more than owning the code, Bubble wins.
- Workload stays inside the plan. If you're well under your allowance, the plan price is your real cost.
If what you're really building is an internal tool (admin screens on top of a database), Retool is another option worth a look. A custom rebuild pays off once the app has proven itself, the plan you need costs more than the build, or owning the code becomes a business requirement. A Bubble app that real customers use is also the best spec a rebuild can have.
Moving off Bubble
The rebuild starts from your live app. Every page, workflow and privacy rule gets mapped, so nothing your users rely on gets lost. Data comes out of Bubble as CSV or JSON per data type, and Bubble emails a link when each export is ready. Those files are mapped into the new database, including the links between data types, and a final export just before launch catches anything added during the build.
Plan how existing users sign in the first time; the usual answer is a password-reset email on launch day, so nobody's password has to move between systems. Run both apps in parallel for a short overlap, point your domain at the new one, then cancel the Bubble plan.
The verdict
Bottom line on Bubble vs. custom
Over five years, Starter comes to $1,740, Growth to $7,140 and Team to $20,940, against $9,600–$14,600 for a custom app. On Starter and Growth, the subscription costs less; on Team, a custom build costs less. Those are web-only plans before extra workload, which only pushes Bubble's side up.
Beyond price, decide on ownership and control: whether the app needs to run somewhere other than Bubble, whether you need to own the code, and how predictable the bill has to be. After launch, Care hosting ($100/mo) adds an hour of content edits a month; new features are quoted separately. See how a custom web app build works →
Questions about Bubble vs. a custom app
Is rebuilding my Bubble app as custom code cheaper?
It depends on your plan. Over five years on Bubble's web-only plans, Starter comes to $1,740, Growth to $7,140 and Team to $20,940, before any extra workload. A custom app on Core hosting comes to $9,600–$14,600. Against Starter and Growth, the subscription costs less; against Team, a custom build costs less. Bubble prices per project, not per user, so the number of people using the app doesn't change these figures.
What happens if my Bubble app goes over its workload units?
You either buy a workload add-on tier or pay overage as you go. Bubble publishes both: tiers run from $26 a month for 200K more units up to $539 a month for 6M more, and overage runs $0.10 to $0.15 per 1,000 units depending on the tier. Workload is shared across your web and mobile apps. A custom app runs on a server with a fixed monthly price; heavier use means a bigger server, priced up front.
Can I bring my Bubble data over?
Yes. From Data > App data in the Bubble editor, each data type can be exported as CSV, JSON or newline-delimited JSON, and Bubble emails a download link when the export is ready. Its Data API can pull the same records programmatically. Those exports are mapped into the new app's database during the build. The app itself doesn't come across: Bubble says there's no way to export an application as code, so pages, workflows and logic get rebuilt.
Should I rebuild, or stay on Bubble?
Stay if the app works, you're on a lower plan, and workload stays inside what's included. Rebuild when the plan you need costs more than a custom build over the years you'll run it, when workload overages make the bill hard to predict, or when owning the code matters to you, to investors or to a buyer.
Can AI be added to a custom app?
Yes. If you already use an AI service (OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, or any provider with an API), it can be connected to your app to summarize notes, draft emails and replies, or answer questions about your records. You keep your own account and pay the provider directly for usage, and nothing it suggests changes your data until someone on your team approves it. Adding it runs $2,500–$6,000.
